RT Swag and Loot

Here are some of my loot from RT. Not as much as when I attend with my car, heh, but hey, loot is loot!

Want a bag of swag and books? If you'd like a chance to win some free stuff, write a comment about where you put your piles of books. Do you pile them all over the place? Is a neat freak with perfect shelves? Under the bed?

Demon Dog will pick one lucky winner. He's very good at putting his nose in a basket of treats wrapped with names and picking one! Sorry, MikiSquirrel will just tear all the paper up for her nest. Jiggle Low is too busy chasing Lilah all around the place right now to care about treats :P.

This "contest" is open to US and Canadian readers only, so sorry (I can't afford the international postage!). You have till next Friday to comment.

SEAL Books Giveaway

I thought I'd join in the frenzy of SEALs, SEALs, SEALs and give away my Crossfire series. Of the three only THE HUNTER is available for sale for your Kindle (or Nook from BN and other formats from Harper Collins). I'm working to get the rights back to The Hunter so I could own the whole series.

Anyway, I know the great romance-unwashed world has suddenly discovered these alpha heroes whom we in Romancelandia have known and loved for years. The SEALs, because of what has recently happened in the news, is now the hero-du-jour, being dissected and rah-rahed by the media, both glossy and newsy.

War is never pretty, nor the bloody parts any reason for celebration. However, as a military/spec. ops romance writer, I'd like to share my love for the Spec Ops Hero--his physical prowess, his mental toughness, his honor and love for justice and especially how that translates to his romantic side--with new readers.

The SEALs in my Crossfire series were fun to write and interviewing them and some Rangers were a few of the highlights for my research. One of the best moments was having lunch with Pamela Clare with her SEAL friend and talking to him about explosives and he, in return, casting some suspicious questions in my direction :-).

Here are the three books:

Three winners will be selected by my Spec. Ops Canine-Spies Code Names Demon Dog, Jiggle Low and "The Squirrel."

All you have to do is answer this question in the Comments:

Why do you like to read about Spec. Ops. heroes (SEALs, Rangers, etc.)?

This contest is only open to those living the US and Canada (sorry, the cost of mailing overseas is beyond my piggy bank allowance). You have till next Tuesday to enter.

Spread the word to win a SEAL book!

ARC Giveaway/Book Review: Noturne by Syrie James

Once in a while, I'm sent an ARC (Advanced Reading Copy) to read and review.  If you write in the comment area the last book you read in 2010, I'll put the names in the special hat and let MikiSquirrel pick one to get a copy of the book.

Title: Nocturne by Syrie James
Hardcover (Vanguard Press), coming out 4 Jan 2011

Blurb:

When Nicole Whitcomb's car runs off a Colorado mountain road during a blinding snowstorm, she is saved from death by a handsome, fascinating, and enigmatic stranger.

Snowbound with him for days in his beautiful home high in the Rockies, she finds herself powerfully attracted to him. But there are things about him that mystify her, filling her with apprehension.
Who is Michael Tyler? Why does he live alone in such a secluded spot and guard his private life so carefully? What secret--or secrets--is he hiding?
Nicole has secrets of her own and a past she is running from--but Michael understands her better than anyone she has ever known. Soon, she is falling as deeply in love with him as he is with her--a profoundly meaningful experience that is destined to change their lives forever.
As the sexual tension between them builds, however, the clues mount up. When Nicole learns her host's terrifying secret, there is nowhere for her to run but into the blizzard raging outside, and Michael may be the only one who can save her life.

Quick review:
Nocturne is a romantic love story about forbidden love between a woman who meets a man who is also a vampire. If you're a bit tired of another band of fang brothers looking for mates, with good vs evil story arcs, and heroines with magic hoohas, this is not your story.  Nocturne is a simple tale of love between a man, who isn't what he seems, and a woman who appears into his life literally by accident.

The book is a gothic tale in disguise, about loving the man inside the monster.  The elements are there--the magnificent mansion on the lonely Colorado mountains, the lone owner, the trapped heroine, the ugly secret.  Yet, Ms James has stripped the horror and bloody parts out, and merely concentrated on the love affair.

Michael Tyler is more prince than monster.  He's Buffy's Angel with more soul.  He's spent hundreds of years perfecting his loneliness by surrounding himself with things that he can't hurt.  When black ice and an accident brought the injured Nicole to his doorstep, he is forced to help her.  He decides that, by being distant to the beautiful woman, he'd put her out of temptation's way.

However, Nicole has four days to kill and no cell phone service or internet.  What's a girl to do but go investigating this lovely mansion with its pretty music boxes and huge library with memoirs? The man who has given her sanctuary is handsome but rather rude, and when and what exactly does he eat anyway, since there's barely any food in this large place?  Slowly, as she becomes more drawn to him, she unravels Michael's secret.

This love story consists of scenes of two people getting to know each other.  Michael, as a character, is too perfect to be true--a gentle man, skilled in doctoring, carpentry, and plays the piano like a pro.  And he's a master horse whisperer to boot.  Not to mention his current reclusive world famous author persona.  He has had a horrific past, but has somehow become the Dalai Lama of Vampirism.  In fact, he's so perfect, there is barely any conflict other than the fact that he grows fangs.

Nicole is a big fan of Michael the author.  She's very attracted to him and her growing affection is put to the test when she discovers Michael's secret.  But really, if she looks past that blood lust thing, the dude has everything she wants in a man.

Nocturne, like that piece of music, is about the night, a piece with different movements.  Similarly, Nicole's and Michael's relationship moves and grows, yet remains mostly lyrical; it is also haunting because they both are aware that their time together is short.

I enjoyed Nocturne as a music piece.  Evocative and stirring, with a romantic love as its center piece.  But it is also very contained in the sense that nothing concrete actually happens in spite of the big adventure of meeting a noble vampire.  But that's what a nocturne is--it's inspired by the feel of that one perfect night/evening and that's what Syrie James' Nocturne is too, a perfect interlude.

*****

Virtually Hers out in print and BOOKS GIVEAWAY

I've been so busy trying to get caught up at work that I don't even have time to unload my RWA books from my car trunk! I can't do it like I used to, pile them in a neat pyramid in the living room and stare at my loot all week because of DEMON DOG, who, as you know, can climb anything, open anything, and devours everything. It's not a risk I'm willing to take!

But VIRTUALLY HERS, print format, is out this week and I have to promote ;-).

So, comment here and Demon Dog will pick one winner for one book from:

Gennita Low (I have two!)

Marliss Melton (one of my favorite writers of SEAL spec ops!)

Dee Davis (one of best crafters of RS)

Cindy Gerard (nummy heroes!)

In your comment, tell me why you enjoy romantic suspense and which different subset you especially like (police procedural, spec. ops, serial murders, etc.)

You actually have four chances to win, so please get your friends in other forums to come by too. Yes, yes, it's that pesky thing called promotion, you know. Good luck!

Off to RWA & Two Books To Give Away!

Right now, I'm packing for the RWA convention. By this time tomorrow, I'm going to be with my author friends, chatting and exchanging news. I can't wait. No sweaty roofing gear for a few days, yay.

I lost ten pounds for RWA and now I can wear my new outfit that I bought for the party. It's going to be strange wobbling around on high heels for four days, especially since I've been climbing up and down roofs non-stop for the last two months. And instead of hammering, I'll be signing books--it never fails to amuse me how I morph from one to the other, from clothes to conversation to company!

Of course I'll be taking pics and blogging about RWA events. Meanwhile I have two books to give away!

The first the ARC to Kelley Armstrong's newest book:

The other one is none other than the third book in the brilliant Maxine Kiss series by Marjorie Liu:

I just love, LOVE the cover art of both books, don't you? Kelley is one of the first urban fantasy authors who caught many romance readers' attention with her strong women and sexy men. Then there is Marjorie, who writes some of the best paranormal romances as well as this awesome series.

Since their books are coming out end of July together, here is a chance for two lucky winners to get their hands on them. Just write in the comments why you enjoy urban fantasy, one of my favorite genres.

I thought it'd be appropriate for Demon Dog to pick the winners! Good luck!

RWA tomorrow!

Harlequin Vintage Tote Bag 2009 Giveaway

These pretty bags were given out to RWA attendees this year. It's big and decorated with vintage Harlequin cover art. Many of my friends gave theirs to me because they were difficult to fold into their carry-on luggage without creasing.

I HAVE ONE TO GIVE AWAY. With maybe a book or two inside ;-).

If you'd like to win this awesome tote, write a comment in this post, telling me about your first romance book and what do you want to see/read in your romance book today.

For example, my first romance book was Rosemary Rogers' Sweet Savage Love. Or maybe it was a Barbara Cartland, but I can't remember a single title from my collection of her books. RR's story, however, definitely changed my reading habits forever ;-).

As for what I want to read in my romances today, I'd like fewer sex scenes and more h/h sexual tension and relationship exploration. I feel that 15 pages of bedroom antics followed by 2 pages of plot followed by another 15 pages of sexxoring too boring for my current taste. Thirty years ago, yeah, that was titillating. Good tight dialogue, filled with sexy tension, or angst, or Teh Funny is more satisfying and so lacking in my romance reading these days.

So, your turn.

Contest: Free Books & Calendar

Do you remember, a week before RT, I had a contest to give away a copy of Virtually Hers because I was going to make it available at RT Con?

Well, that contest couldn't continue because Angela James, executive editor from Samhaim, wanted to read the manuscript. So anyway, now that I'm back in town and almost caught up with daily life, I'm reopening that contest but with a different prize.

I had these wonderful books and a calendar from RT to give away all ready for photographing. Notice the word HAD. The Bad Puppy aka Alpha Male In The Doghouse chewed three of them up. As in gnawed. And viciously mangled. The pretty covers, especially. The calendar had gotten his special marking technique--a dollop of puppy hate.

Sigh.

Anyway, I do have another copy (or two), thank goodness, of the calendar and as you can see below, Bad Puppy just hates nice pics ;-). Because that's the page he left his marking on in the destroyed calendar.

I haven't decided which new books (unfortunately, they wouldn't be the first bunch of books) will be included with the calendar but they will be just-as-fantastic books I've gotten from the conference--paranormal, suspense, contemporary--every genre to suit your mood!

So, here's my replacement contest for the original Virtually Hers one. VHers, as you know, has been accepted by Samhaim, but the contract stuff isn't done, so I have no news about publication dates, etc. All I know is what Ms. James told me: probably Fall 09 for e-book format and print format next year.

Interested in calendar and books? Here's what you need to do:

1) Write a post here to Angela James, my new editor.
2) Tell her why you love Jed and are looking forward to Virtually Hers and Virtually One.

Why? Because I want my editor to know how much readers want the books, that's why ;-). And because it's simpler than showing her all your hundreds of emails that I've kept, asking for the Virtual series. I can just ask her to look at this post! ;-)

You have till this coming Friday. I promise to hang the calendar on the wall far, far away from the reach of a certain Alpha Male in the Doghouse.

Want A Book or Monkey Nuts for Thanksgiving?

Awesome Shiloh Walker is offering my book, Virtually His, in her Book of the Month contest at her blog. It's still open to those who are interested till end of November.

I thought I would also offer one of Shiloh's books to introduce her to some of you who've never read her. She has so many releases in paperback and e-books that it's hard to catch up with her! ;-) Anyway, for those who love futuristics/urban fantasy and want to read HUNTING THE HUNTER, just comment in today's blog for the rest of the week.

Here's the book description from Amazon:

Bounty hunter Kane Winter has spent two years looking for the mysterious woman who was there when his partner was killed. But when the hunted turns out to be a seductive vampire, Kane is consumed by a desire greater than vengeance-a hunger to possess this woman for himself.

Sounds good, doesn't it?

***********************************************

It's Thanksgiving next week and I'm tempted to tempt my fate with Delta and visit family in Ohio. You know me and Atlanta airport--we have a history ;-). Sometimes it's sad to live in a podunk town with only two airlines in the International Airport. Also, Jiggle Low doesn't like it when mommy is out of town. That possessive bad puppy does mean panty raids when I'm away for a few days. Yup...nice Victoria Secret panties lost forever to puppy teething frenzy.

Do you intend to cook a turkey and entertain (NOT YOU, SQ!!!) or are you planning to visit and be entertained?

When I stay in town, I usually spend Thanksgiving with a close friend and her family. She's a marvelous cook and her sweet potato dish is to die for. For my part, I offer fried rice. Yup. Every year, I make that family Gennita's Fly Lice for Thanksgiving and Christmas, so much so that her son, who turned seventeen this year, thought EVERY family had fried rice for those occasions until he spent Thanksgiving at his girlfriend's place one year.

He told me they looked shocked when he asked, "Where's the fly lice?" Bwahahaha. I've destroyed his and his siblings' adulthood expectations forever. I still remember fondly when I gave them "monkey nuts" for Halloween one year as a "Trick." I call the Ichiban sour limes "monkey nuts," for you Asian girls who know these things ;-). I had, in my mean bad youth, chased away many eager Jehovah Witnesses who came calling at my house with "monkey nuts" offerings. I don't do that any more, of course. Really!
