RT Swag and Loot

Here are some of my loot from RT. Not as much as when I attend with my car, heh, but hey, loot is loot!

Want a bag of swag and books? If you'd like a chance to win some free stuff, write a comment about where you put your piles of books. Do you pile them all over the place? Is a neat freak with perfect shelves? Under the bed?

Demon Dog will pick one lucky winner. He's very good at putting his nose in a basket of treats wrapped with names and picking one! Sorry, MikiSquirrel will just tear all the paper up for her nest. Jiggle Low is too busy chasing Lilah all around the place right now to care about treats :P.

This "contest" is open to US and Canadian readers only, so sorry (I can't afford the international postage!). You have till next Friday to comment.

Coupon Giveaway

Sorry for the weeklong silence but I've incredibly busy with roofing and writing. Roof advice for those looking to buy one of those old Spanish "castle" roof-lines in FL. Beautiful and romantic to look at, for sure, but hold on to your money! The flat roofs are going to be a money pit, especially if the turret (parapet) walls that you fell in love with had been done wrong and everything underneath your beautiful stucco on top of the roof, where you can't see, is rotten.

As for writing, I've been immersed in:
1) trying to plot out a short, short, short story for the Seal of my Dreams anthology (www.sealofmydreams.com) which has been a challenging process, to say the least, because it's going to be a tight story of thirty or under pages. Not many words to work out a believable romance! There are a bunch of excellent authors in this anthology (over 12!) so I need to get my creative mojo to find something unique. With so many contributors and one theme and length, I'm sure the universal consciousness is going to spit out several "same scenario, different twist" stories, and I'm trying not to do that. So...I put the thinking cap on Muse and she...well, gah, she just thinks calories are needed, if you know what I mean.

2) I've been busy formatting The Protector, The Hunter, and The Sleeper my three SEAL books from the Crossfire trilogy to which the rights have been reverted back to me.  It's taking longer than I thought because it's all a learning process for me as well as an expensive one. More on this in another post this week.

3) MikiSquirrel's book! It's ready but I need to figure things out for Amazon's do-it-yourself arm, Createspace, like how to get illustrations to come out right and fix dpis on photos. It's quite a little project for such a small book (30 pages)! It's very different from formatting a regular manuscript with type words and yes, frustrating too, if you're not a techy person. I'm not a techy person, so I'm going to need help on this first try with children's books.

And now, for having patiently read through the whole post ;-), I'm announcing a coupon giveaway. I have a eHarlequin coupon for 30% off any books on their site. One commenter will get the code.

Please comment whether you'd be interested in a children's book about a squirrel when it comes out in a few weeks :-) and what price range would a 30 page 7X9 book should, in your opinion, cost. See, such an easy contest!

GIVEAWAY CLOSES END OF THIS WEEK.

Review: A SONG FOR MY MOTHER by Kat Martin

Genre: Women's Fiction
Hardcover
Vanguard Press (Ap 5, 2011)

I received this ARC for review and will be giving it away to one lucky commenter who answers a question.  The contest ends next Monday.

****************

A Song For My Mother is a reunion story between a daughter and her mother.  It's quite short--the author called it a novella in her interview at the end of the book--and I read it in one sitting.

Marly Hanson has been estranged from her mother, Winnie, for years since Marly ran away with her boyfriend during Junior High.  Marly has never forgiven her mother for never choosing to walk away from her abusive father, but because of her daughter's recent bout with brain cancer, she is compelled to visit her old hometown so her daughter could meet her grandmother.

Complicating matters, Marly becomes attracted to Winnie's next door neighbor, a handsome sheriff named Reed.  She isn't planning to stay and certainly doesn't intend to have a serious relationship.

Besides the mother-daughter conflict, there is also romance and friendship. Reed is the likeable and solid hero.  His son (he's a widower) makes a good friend for Marly's daughter.  Also, there's a small sub-plot that the author used to show how a decision made by any parent could be a mistake with grave consequences, highlighting Marly's and Winnie's past decisions.

A Song For My Mother is about Marly's journey back home.  It's a tale of understanding, forgiveness, and ultimately, love. The story is simple, with few surprises, but it's a charming and enjoyable read. I think it's a perfect Mother's Day gift.

*************
If you'd like a chance to get this book for free, please answer this question in the comments:

What was the best present you gave to your mother?

One winner will be picked from the hat next Monday! Good luck!

Free Books

The signing at Altamonte Springs was lovely and even the drive back and forth on the scary I-4 onto 436 wasn't the nightmare it usually is.  The mall was full of shoppers and many stopped by to browse among the big circle of authors surrounding the fountain.

Usually, a signing by one's lonesome self is an excruciating experience, especially if no one knows you're an author and the only people stopping at your table wants to know where the rest room is.  But with a group of friends, it's easier, and we get to walk around and browse at their tables too.  It was great fun chatting up with Roxanne St. Clair (who had wonderful news about a movie option!) and C.L. Lewis and her lovely daughter.

At the end of the day, the coordinator gave us a bag of books as a parting gift.  Yay, books ;-).  And I bought myself some CINNABONS, which is what malls are all about to me.  No Cinnabons? Ha, you ain't no mall.

Anyway, many of the books in the bag are new-to-me authors.  I'm picking a couple for myself and then would like to share the bag with two of my blog readers.

So, if you would like some FREE BOOKS, write in the comment area your favorite NEW-TO-YOU author find this year.  My new find this year is Jax Cassidy.

Next week sometime, I'll pick two names from the comments and announce the "winners."

Your Uber Reward (VHERS Contest)

They say patience is a virtue. I tell you, they lied. Patience will eat the soul up, torture you with happy smileys, then spit your spoonful of hope out like a very naughty angry child.

But I digress. I'm not a bitter person, dwelling on pain and trauma. I'm a very, very happy uberauthor who wants to share her joy with her GlowGirls. This is my thank you to all of you who have given me support and encouragement in my darkest moments.

I've been good. I've been PATIENT. But now I'm going to kick Patience to the curb and shake my bootie. Why? Because it's a month a way, friends.

This is for you non-reviewers, who have been soooooo patient all these years. Want a hard copy of Jed?

Now, now, get that dirty thought out of your dirty little minds ;-). I mean a hard copy of Virtually Hers -- printed out for your reading pleasure.

Here are the Contest Rules.

1) You must post here on this blog.

2) You must answer 2 questions:

a) What would Jed do if Hell had him immobile and at her mercy? ;-)
b) Fill in the blank: Since it's been TWO freaking years since VHis, I'm now so happy ___________! ;-D (Be innovative. This IS a contest!)

3) You must be in the US because I can't afford the postage overseas (sorry, 300 printed pages is a lot of weight!)

4) This contest ends this coming Friday.

That's it. Let me see how much you want a hard Jed copy of Virtually Hers.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE!!!!!!!

Out of fairness, I put all your names in the totebag and picked the winner and it is...

Congratulations! Please email me, Heather, with your snailmail addy.

As for everyone else, don't worry, I have a LOT of RWA Loot to give away in the near future ;-). I want to use them to promote VIRTUALLY HERS, though, so if you have any good suggestions how to make a fun contest that will also help me to get VHERS pub date out in the web world, please leave me a post!

Harlequin Vintage Tote Bag 2009 Giveaway

These pretty bags were given out to RWA attendees this year. It's big and decorated with vintage Harlequin cover art. Many of my friends gave theirs to me because they were difficult to fold into their carry-on luggage without creasing.

I HAVE ONE TO GIVE AWAY. With maybe a book or two inside ;-).

If you'd like to win this awesome tote, write a comment in this post, telling me about your first romance book and what do you want to see/read in your romance book today.

For example, my first romance book was Rosemary Rogers' Sweet Savage Love. Or maybe it was a Barbara Cartland, but I can't remember a single title from my collection of her books. RR's story, however, definitely changed my reading habits forever ;-).

As for what I want to read in my romances today, I'd like fewer sex scenes and more h/h sexual tension and relationship exploration. I feel that 15 pages of bedroom antics followed by 2 pages of plot followed by another 15 pages of sexxoring too boring for my current taste. Thirty years ago, yeah, that was titillating. Good tight dialogue, filled with sexy tension, or angst, or Teh Funny is more satisfying and so lacking in my romance reading these days.

So, your turn.

Contest: Free Books & Calendar

Do you remember, a week before RT, I had a contest to give away a copy of Virtually Hers because I was going to make it available at RT Con?

Well, that contest couldn't continue because Angela James, executive editor from Samhaim, wanted to read the manuscript. So anyway, now that I'm back in town and almost caught up with daily life, I'm reopening that contest but with a different prize.

I had these wonderful books and a calendar from RT to give away all ready for photographing. Notice the word HAD. The Bad Puppy aka Alpha Male In The Doghouse chewed three of them up. As in gnawed. And viciously mangled. The pretty covers, especially. The calendar had gotten his special marking technique--a dollop of puppy hate.

Sigh.

Anyway, I do have another copy (or two), thank goodness, of the calendar and as you can see below, Bad Puppy just hates nice pics ;-). Because that's the page he left his marking on in the destroyed calendar.

I haven't decided which new books (unfortunately, they wouldn't be the first bunch of books) will be included with the calendar but they will be just-as-fantastic books I've gotten from the conference--paranormal, suspense, contemporary--every genre to suit your mood!

So, here's my replacement contest for the original Virtually Hers one. VHers, as you know, has been accepted by Samhaim, but the contract stuff isn't done, so I have no news about publication dates, etc. All I know is what Ms. James told me: probably Fall 09 for e-book format and print format next year.

Interested in calendar and books? Here's what you need to do:

1) Write a post here to Angela James, my new editor.
2) Tell her why you love Jed and are looking forward to Virtually Hers and Virtually One.

Why? Because I want my editor to know how much readers want the books, that's why ;-). And because it's simpler than showing her all your hundreds of emails that I've kept, asking for the Virtual series. I can just ask her to look at this post! ;-)

You have till this coming Friday. I promise to hang the calendar on the wall far, far away from the reach of a certain Alpha Male in the Doghouse.

Keanu! Klaatu barada nikto!

Amuse me, my darlings.

You know that famous line in The Day The Earth Stood Still: Klaatu Barada Nikto!

Here's a chance for you to yell this out at Keanu Reeves on the remake and tell me what you mean.

For example: Keanu! Klaatu Barada Nikto! = Keanu! Your face is so expressive!

or Keanu! Stop looking dead!

or Keanu! Best acting ever!

or Keanu! Excellent adventure, Not!

;-)

Winner picks one of these prizes:

1) $10 Amazon gift certificate sent through email

2) The first five chapters of Virtually Hers (approx. 100 pages)

3) A science fiction book of my choice

4) A paranormal book of my choice

5) Keanu Reeves reading Shakespeare's The Tempest to you, all the parts, in one long monotone

Umm, #5 is a joke, in case you got overly excited and picked it. You can still choose it, of course, but this Shakespearean version never existed, for which we should all be grateful.

Let's see how good your alien language interpretation is! ;-)
